How do I create an in-text citation in MLA style?

Answer

Each citation must include either the author's last name and the page number or range where the information being quoted or paraphrased was found or the first word of the title of the article if there is no author indicated.

  • Cite the author's last name  at the end of the sentence or passage within parentheses including page number/range (see examples below).
  • If the source's author's name is mentioned in the paragraph, only indicate the page number within parentheses at the end of the passage.
  • If the source has 2 authors, the cite will contain both last names connected by the word 'and'.
  • If there are more than 2 authors, include the last name of the first author followed by a comma and 'et al.'
  • If there are no authors, use the first meaningful word/s of the title enclosed in parentheses.
